By Jules Romains and Stefan Zweig, based on the play by Ben Jonson
“Volpone, or The Fox” by Ben Jonson is a satirical comedy about a world in which wealth becomes the only measure of value, and morality is easily traded for profit. Written more than 400 years ago, the play sounds strikingly contemporary because it speaks about something time has never managed to change — human greed.
The wealthy Venetian Volpone, assisted by his cunning servant Mosca, pretends to be terminally ill in order to gather around him a whole crowd of “friends” eager to inherit his fortune. One after another, they bring gifts, flattery, and promises, ready to endure any humiliation in the name of future gain.
As the story unfolds, the comedy becomes a sharp satirical mirror of human weaknesses — hypocrisy, self-interest, and self-deception. The laughter comes easily, but what remains afterward is the uncomfortable question of how different the characters on stage really are from ourselves.
