In 2026, we mark the 275th anniversary of the birth of Richard Brinsley Sheridan – British playwright, impresario, orator, and Whig politician.
His plays form a historical bridge between the comedy of manners of the late 17th century and the works of Oscar Wilde in the 19th century.
“The School for Scandal” is a five-act comedy from 1777. With its sharp satire of affectation and pretentiousness, it is considered one of the greatest comedies of manners in English literature.
Sir Charles Surface is an extravagant but kind-hearted young man. His brother Joseph, considered more respectable and worthy, is in fact an intriguer who courts Lady Teazle, the young wife of a wealthy older nobleman. Sir Oliver Surface, the uncle of Charles and Joseph, disguises himself in order to decide which of his nephews will become his heir. Joseph is exposed as a hypocrite, while Charles triumphs, winning both fortune and true love.
